I don't look like most Utahns. My skin's darker. My hair has no curl and it's as black as you can get. My grandparents were immigrants from Japan. If you accept the traditional narrative, my Asian heritage burdens me as a "minority." Instead of being part of the "white" power structure, my appearance marks me as an outsider.
By this racialist narrative, though, I am also privy to a "perspective" unavailable to the majority. As an Asian, and thus "minority," I "know" what it's like to be discriminated against. I "know" how difficult it is for a "person of color" to succeed in Utah's lily-white education, political and business worlds.
